About Cake Smash Sessions

Our cakesmash sessions typically take place around 11months old, we do this to ensure you receive your photos before your little ones birthday. So how does it work ? prior to your session we work with you to discuss your ideas on the perfect theme/colour scheme to suit your little ones personality. You bring the cake and the outfit your little one will be wearing and we provide all the decorations and props. This year has gone so fast right? we know! it doesn’t seem like 2 minutes ago you was bringing a tiny newborn into the world! they will continue to grow and the memories will fade but these images will remain timeless. It really is such a special way to celebrate your baby turning one and we really do love watching how they react to having a huge cake put infront of them… no two sessions are ever the same! Come watch your little one make a complete mess of our studio… without you having to clean it up, thats my job!

FAQ’S

What is a cake smash?

A cake smash session is held around a babies first birthday. Babies are given a cake and the freedom to eat/destroy it however they please. For some babies this is their first taste of cake or a sugary dessert so it really is fun to see how they react to it. Some babies go wild and some take a little bit of reassurance but we always manage to get the cutest images! Some families go wild with custom outfits and cakes to match a colour scheme or theme and some stay minimalist with a home made cake and a few balloons, there is no right or wrong way to do a cake smash, pick what you like or ask me for help with any ideas.

When is the best time to schedule a cake smash?

Again there is no right or wrong time to come for a cake smash, some parents like to come on their babies actual 1st birthday and celebrate it with us, what a way to spend their special day! However it is important to some parents that they have their photos ready for their littles ones birthday so they can post them on social media or to post on a banner etc for their birthday party. If this is the case for you we recommend booking 3 weeks before your little ones birthday. We have a 2-3 week turn around time for images so keep that in mind when booking , however you do receive a preview a couple of days after you come for your session.

How much does a cake smash session cost?

We have three prices for our cake smash packages to suit everyones budget, please see our pricing guide for more information.

How long does the session last?

Cake smash sessions usually last between 30 minutes to an hour depending on which package you purchase and how much your little one is enjoying themselves.

DO YOU ALSO TAKE NON-CAKE SMASH PHOTOS?

Yes, on package 2 & 3 we do some nice photos before the messy cake smash part of the session, this will be on a neutral white backdrop. It is encouraged to bring a nice outfit for your little one to be photographed in, this part of the session can also include a couple of images with siblings/parents.

WHAT CAKE SHALL I BRING?

We recommend bringing a cake with soft frosting on rather than hard fondant icing , fondant icing can be difficult for a little one to break into and frosting is sooo much messier! Some parents have professional cake makers provide their cake , some buy them from the supermarket and some bake one themselves at home.

IVE SPENT A YEAR TRYING TO ENCOURAGE HEALTHY EATING IN MY BABY. WHY SHOULD I GIVE THEM A CAKE COVERED IN SUGARY FROSTING AND IS THERE ANY ALTERNATIVES?

The amount of cake that is actually eaten during a cake smash is usually pretty small, babies usually take a few nibbles or the occasional mouthful. it is really all about seeing them take those first few tastes and capturing their reactions. Some babies really aren’t that keen on the taste and often they find it too sweet, in this case its all about capturing them explore with their hands and watching them make a mess without having to clean it up ! Plus it is definitely a one off and you won’t change tour babies eating habits with a small amount of cake. if you are still concerned then there are plenty of alternatives to choose from such as fruit and youghurt, we have even done a few spaghetti bolognaise smash sessions before !
